The CIA Challenge Exam is a one-part pathway to the Certified Internal Auditor designation for eligible CPA or CA holders, active CISA holders, and, during the 2026 pilot, professionals with at least 10 years of relevant experience. The exam contains 150 multiple-choice questions, lasts 180 minutes, and uses a 600-point passing score. Its 2026 syllabus follows the Global Internal Audit Standards and covers professionalism, audit operations, engagement planning, engagement performance, and reporting and monitoring through The Institute of Internal Auditors. The Certified Internal Auditor Challenge Exam provides an accelerated route to the CIA designation without requiring eligible candidates to complete the traditional three-part CIA examination. It recognizes knowledge already demonstrated through an approved accounting qualification, an active CISA designation, or extensive internal audit experience. The phrases Certified Internal Auditor CIA Challenge Exam, IIA CIA Challenge Exam, IIA Challenge Exam, “challenge exam CIA,” and “CIA exam challenge” all refer to this one-part certification pathway administered by The Institute of Internal Auditors.
The CIA Challenge is a secure, computer-based examination that assesses whether an experienced or previously qualified professional can apply internal audit principles at an advanced level. It is not a shortened beginner-level test. The examination combines topics from across the CIA body of knowledge and requires candidates to make decisions involving:
Beginning in June 2026, The IIA introduced a unified Challenge Exam aligned with the 2024 Global Internal Audit Standards. Candidates now take the same examination content regardless of whether they qualify through accounting, information systems, or professional experience.
There are currently three eligibility pathways.
| Eligibility pathway | Who can apply? | Application availability |
| Accounting pathway | Active CPA or CA holders from an approved accounting body | Open year-round |
| Information systems pathway | Active CISA designation holders | Open year-round |
| Professional pathway | Professionals with at least 10 years of qualifying experience | Pilot applications through September 30, 2026 |
Each pathway leads to the same CIA designation and uses the same exam format and syllabus.
Candidates must hold an active CPA, CA, or equivalent credential from an accounting organization approved by The IIA. Approved bodies include the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, ICAI, CPA Australia, CPA Canada, ICAEW, and numerous other recognized organizations.Applicants must provide a letter of good standing and valid government-issued identification. Students who have not yet received an approved professional designation are not eligible through this pathway.
Information systems professionals must hold an active Certified Information Systems Auditor designation. They must provide proof of good standing from the public registry and a valid government-issued photo ID during the application process.Additional work-experience verification is not required under this credential-based pathway.
The 2026 professional pathway is a pilot for candidates with at least 10 years of relevant experience in areas such as:
Applicants must submit a completed experience verification form. The IIA may contact employers to verify the information provided. The pilot application deadline is September 30, 2026, and initial testing is available in the June, September, and November 2026 windows.
The exam format is the same across all three eligibility pathways.
| Exam feature | Current format |
| Number of examinations | One |
| Question type | Multiple choice |
| Total questions | 150 |
| Testing time | 180 minutes |
| Average time per question | Approximately 72 seconds |
| Passing score | 600 on a scaled score |
| Delivery method | Secure computer-based testing |
| Standard testing windows | February, June, September, and November |
The exam requires disciplined pacing. A candidate who spends two or three minutes on several difficult questions may create unnecessary time pressure near the end. A practical approach is to answer clear questions first, flag uncertain items, and use the remaining time for review. CIA Challenge Exam Syllabus for 2026The current CIA Challenge Exam syllabus became effective in June 2026 and is aligned with the Global Internal Audit Standards.
| Syllabus section | Exam weight |
| Internal Audit Professionalism and Quality | 20% |
| Internal Audit Operations and Audit Plan | 15% |
| Engagement Planning | 20% |
| Engagement Performance | 25% |
| Engagement Results and Monitoring | 20% |
The heaviest section is Engagement Performance, representing one-quarter of the examination. However, candidates should not prepare only according to weight. Independence, planning, evidence, reporting, and escalation concepts frequently connect across several sections.
This section covers the internal audit mandate, reporting relationships, independence, individual objectivity, confidentiality, quality assurance, performance measures, and communication of nonconformance.Candidates must distinguish the responsibilities of the board, senior management, the chief audit executive, and individual auditors.
This domain addresses resource management, internal audit strategy, stakeholder communication, the audit universe, risk-based planning, external service providers, and coordination with other assurance providers. It tests the candidate’s ability to think beyond an individual engagement and understand how an internal audit function is managed.
These two sections represent 45% of the syllabus. They cover objectives, scope, evaluation criteria, risk assessment, work programs, cybersecurity, business processes, evidence, analytics, workpapers, findings, conclusions, supervision, and stakeholder communication.Candidates should understand the correct audit sequence. For example, an auditor should not recommend corrective action before gathering sufficient evidence and identifying the root cause of the condition.
This section examines final reports, recommendations, management action plans, residual risk, risk acceptance, follow-up, and escalation.A common exam distinction is that management owns and accepts risk, while the chief audit executive must communicate unacceptable risk through the appropriate escalation process.
The published CIA Challenge Exam fee is divided into an application charge and an examination registration charge.
| Cost component | IIA member | Non-member |
| Application fee | $150 | $380 |
| Examination fee | $845 | $1,245 |
| Total standard fees | $995 | $1,625 |
These CIA Challenge Exam fees apply in the United States, Canada, and selected countries. Pricing, membership charges, and taxes may differ where a National Institute administers the program.Fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. The Challenge Exam also has no provision for program or exam extensions, so candidates should select a testing window before purchasing their examination registration.
Complete CIA Challenge Exam registration through The IIA’s Certification Candidate Management System, known as CCMS.
After exam registration, the authorization is normally valid for 180 days or until the certification program expires, whichever occurs first. The selected testing window must fall within that authorization period.
The official CIA Challenge Exam passing score is 600 on The IIA’s scaled scoring system. This does not mean candidates must answer exactly 60% or 80% of the questions correctly. Scaled scoring accounts for differences in examination-form difficulty, so the raw number of correct answers needed may vary. The IIA does not publish a current official CIA Challenge Exam pass rate. Websites advertising a guaranteed pass percentage or presenting an unsupported global pass-rate figure should not be treated as authoritative.Candidates should measure readiness through repeatable mock-exam performance, domain-level accuracy, and the ability to explain why incorrect options are weaker—not through an unofficial pass-rate estimate.
Effective CIA Challenge Exam study material should match the syllabus effective June 2026. Older resources may emphasize superseded terminology or content aligned with the previous professional practices framework.A complete preparation package should include:
A structured CIA Challenge Exam prep course is especially useful for accountants and CISA holders who understand assurance concepts but need stronger knowledge of internal audit governance, engagement methodology, reporting relationships, and quality requirements.
Official CIA Challenge Exam practice questions use retired examination items and provide explanations for correct and incorrect options. The official practice product includes 150 questions and allows longer review time than the live examination. Free CIA Challenge Exam sample questions can help candidates understand the style of professional-judgment questions, but a small sample cannot measure complete exam readiness. When evaluating a CIA Challenge Exam question bank, look for:
Avoid any CIA Challenge Exam test bank claiming to contain live, leaked, or memorized examination content. The CIA is a non-disclosed examination, and current exam questions are not officially released. Ethical preparation protects both the candidate and the value of the credential.
Use a five-stage preparation method:
Strong candidates treat CIA Challenge Exam questions as decision problems. When two answers appear correct, choose the option that best protects independence, follows the proper audit sequence, uses sufficient evidence, and communicates to the correct authority.
For examinations beginning with the September 2026 testing window, official CIA Challenge Exam results are expected within three weeks of the examination date. Candidates receive a system-generated email when the result is available. The IIA no longer provides an immediate unofficial score. This allows time for post-exam quality and security reviews before the official result is released.
Accountants should spend extra time on internal audit independence, quality assurance, and risk-based engagement methodology. CISA holders may need deeper preparation in governance, reporting, and non-technology business processes. Experienced auditors should not rely only on workplace habits; exam answers must follow the Global Internal Audit Standards.Confirm your eligibility, download the current syllabus, calculate the complete cost, and select study resources that develop professional judgment. That disciplined approach is the most reliable way to prepare for the CIA Challenge Exam.
